On Sunday three of the St Peters athletes made the short journey to National Sports campus in Abbotstown to take part in the National Cross Country Championships. All three girls were part of the Louth under twelve team. Niamh Brady was also part of the Leinster team while Julie McLoughlin and Ellie Smyth along with Niamh were part of the Louth team. This new purpose built cross country coarse was in perfect order and the dry but cool weather was the perfect setting and the large number in attendance were treated to a day of highly entertaining races from the first race which was the girls under twelve to the senior men's race which finished off the day.

Niamh Brady was the first of the St Peters girls home with a 44th place finish followed by Julie McLoughlin in 82nd and Ellie Smyth in 109th. All three girls scored for the Louth team with Niamh the 2nd scorer Julie 5th and Ellie 6th. All three girls ran well after bad starts and worked their ways through the massive field which isn't easy as the course was quite tight in places. The Leinster team which Niamh was part of finished in third place and with Niamh the 6th scorer this fine young athlete added another National medal to her already impressive collection when she collected her bronze medal. All three girls enjoyed the experience and will have gained valuable experience.

This week will bring the curtain down on the local Cross Country season when the annual Louth Masters championships takes place in Togher. The event will take place on the lands of St Peters stalwarts Andrew Rogers and Brendan Rogers which is the third year the St Peters AC men have hosted this event which is run over 3000M for the ladies and 5000M for the men.

22 November 2016

On Sunday the Louth Senior Cross Country Championships took place at the new Drogheda and District AC facility at Newtownstalaban, Drogheda which was preceded by the juvenile Cross Country relays which was run over even ages. The St Peter’s club had three teams in competing in total in the juvenile relays one in the under 10 boys’ race and one in each of the under twelve races. The relays were a very enjoyable event and all three of the club teams were in the medals.

The first of the club teams in action was the under ten mixed team that competed in the boys’ race. Ben McKeown ran the first leg followed by Matthew Durnin who passed the baton to Orla McLoughlin who wasn't phased at being the only girl in the race and the final leg being run by the inform Harry O’Reilly, all four ran really well to finish in second place.

The girls under twelve also ran very bravely with Julie McLoughlin running very strongly in the first leg passing the baton to Ellie Smith who also ran really well as did her training partner Isabel Fitzpatrick who put in a great effort before Niamh Brady finished the job off for the team who won bronze.

The final race concerning the club was the boys under 12 race with Mark Litchfield running the first leg before passing the baton to Cian Loy who also had a solid run before passing to Jack McLaughlin who ran a good third leg, the final leg was run by Sean Allen who had a great run and closed the gap somewhat on the Boyne athlete on front narrowly missing out on victory for the team but the boys got well deserved silver medals. This was a most enjoyable event for the club and the Drogheda and District club are to be congratulated on this fine facility.

This week training continues as next weekend the first of our athletes who have qualified for the National Championships which will take place in the new purpose build facility in Adamstown. Niamh Brady, Julie McLoughlin and Ellie Smith will go into battle as part of the Louth under twelve team.

On Sunday the Leinster uneven age groups cross country championships took place at New Forest Golf Resort in Tyrrellstown, Co. Westmeath. The conditions were perfect and underfoot conditions ideal for running. The club had two girls compete in the girls under eleven race, Ellie Smyth who had an excellent race two weeks earlier was joined by her training partner Isabel Fitzpatrick and both tried really hard in the very large field. Ellie had the misfortune of losing one of her spikes in the early stages of the race however this didn't stop her although it probably hampered her progress, Isabel tried really hard and both made the Louth County team that finished fifth.

In the boys under eleven race St Peters had a four man team compete. Jack McLaughlin led the team home with an overall 18th place finish very closely followed by club mate Harry O’Reilly in 19th place, Padraic Tinnelly had another good performance to finish in 38th with Conor Litchfield finishing well up the large field also. When the points were added the club team finished in fifth however the County team finished in 4th place in the inter-County Competition and qualified for the National championship with three of the six coming from the St Peters club.

The club also fielded a team in the boys under 13 race and all four boys acquitted themselves well, Sean Allen who had a bad start to the race worked his way up through the large field of competitors to finish in 17th position, Sean was also the fourth scorer on the Louth team that finished second in the inter-county competition to help the county to win silver medals. Rory McLoughlin was also on course to stake a claim for a county team position but unfortunately went over on an ankle on the back straight with around 200M to go and had to retire. Cian Loy and Mark Litchfield also battled well and the experience will stand them in good stead as both along with Sean Allen are eligible to run under thirteen again next year.

The championship races were preceded by an under 9 races, which were put on by the host club Mullingar Harriers, Orla McLoughlin, who is an excellent prospect, finished in an excellent 6th place.

Training continues this week as the club will prepare the Cross Country relays which will precede the County Senior Cross Country Championships which will take place in the new Drogheda and District training facility in Drogheda on Sunday next.

1 November 2016

On Saturday last the St Peters club athletes travelled to Tyrellstown outside Mullingar to take part in the Leinster Cross Country Championships for even ages. The club had athletes compete in two of the races both in the under twelve age category.

Niamh Brady had her best distance race of the year and put her earlier season woes behind her and produced an excellent performance to finish in sixth place and more importantly qualified for the National Championships. Niamh also led home the Louth County team to a fourth place finish and qualifies the county team for the National Championships also. The county team had three St Peters athletes as Julie McLoughlin ran a great race to finish 36th and be the fourth scorer on the Louth team and Ellie Smyth who is still under eleven finished in 56th and was the sixth scorer on the Louth team. It's a great feat for the St Peters club to have three athletes on a county team of six and also a great achievement to have three athletes taking part in the upcoming National Championships.

Unfortunately the boys under twelve Athletes didn't enjoy the same fortunes. Sean Allen was the first of the club athletes to finish but a below par performance had Sean finish in 18th place which was unfortunate as Sean had shown signs recently that is form was returning however he picked up a bug during the week and is energy levels didn't appear to be what they usually are, Mark Litchfield who was experiencing his first Provincial Cross Country championship will have learned from the experience and finished in 57th place with the ever reliable Cian Loy close behind in 60th. Padraig Tinnelly who was also running his first Leinster Championship finished just behind the two boys with a 62nd place finish which will stand him in good stead for the upcoming under eleven championship in two weeks. Dean Murtagh also ran really well to finish well up the massive field of competitors. The club team finished in seventh place and the Louth team which contained three St Peters Athletes finished in 5th place just narrowly missing out on a place in the National event in November.
