The highlight of the Irish track and field season took place in Morton Stadium, Santry on Saturday and Sunday last. The cream of Irish athletics gathered at the North Dublin venue with national titles along with European and Olympic qualifying up for grabs. The event was preceded by the Tailteann Games, which is an inter-provincial schools’ competition. The St Peter’s club had athletes competing in both events.

In the National Senior Championships there were three athletes wearing the blue and black singlet of the Dromiskin based club. Conor Durnin was in action in the triple jump on Saturday. Conor has enjoyed a successful year to date at both junior and college level and didn't look out of place among the country’s top jumpers. His best of the six jumps was 13.34m which earned him a sixth place finish.

Mark Rogers, who earlier in the year won a bronze medal in the National Combined Events, took part in the senior men's high jump. Mark jumped 1.85m which earned him an eighth place finish. Veteran club thrower Tom McGrane, who is always available to represent the club when fit, once again showed great spirit against his younger competitors with a putt of 9.13m in the senior men's shot putt.

The best performance by a club athlete over the weekend came in the Tailteann Games when Gabriel Bell, wearing the Leinster singlet, put in a fantastic performance in the long jump. Gabriel, who only recently set a PB in the long jump, had a massive leap of 6.31m, smashing his PB by 14 cm. Gabriel is eligible for the same age group next year; he finished in fourth place and will take great confidence going into the National Juvenile Championships next month.

Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday as athletes prepare for the National Juvenile Championships and the National Juvenile B Championships.

Morgan Quigley was also in action and performed well in his first Leinster Championship for the club.

Gabriel Bell who is once again enjoying a fantastic season was in action on both days, on Saturday Gabriel had a massive leap in the Long jump of 6.09M to win Gold in the under 16 category. Gabriel is not just a field athlete and dusted the sand off his spikes and won silver in the 200M sprint. On Sunday in terrible conditions he was also in action in the high jump in a rain drenched arena he managed to jump 1.60M to win silver and collect his third medal of the championships. Martin McGrane was also in action in the under 19 shot putt competition and was also in the medals with a throw of 9.36M finishing in third place and pocketing a provincial bronze medal.

The previous weekend the club had a total of five athletes representing Louth in the first round of the National League in Santry. A busy week for the younger athletes of the St Peters Club with the Leinster U9-U11 pairs and under 12-13 Championships taking place on Saturday and the Leinster Teams Competition on the bank holiday Monday.

The small Dromiskin based club had some very good performances and as usual had silverware home with them on both days. In the pairs competition the highlight for the club was the under 11 Long jump when the pairing of Lucy Brennan and Isabel Fitzpatrick won silver medals, this was a very keenly contested and the two girls won their medals by the slightest margins, Lucy Jumped 3.43 and Isabel Jumped 3.22. The girls also took part in the 60m sprint and were unlucky not to medal there also. The club also had another pair in the same age group has Katie Mulligan and Ellie Smyth both jumped very well in the Long jump but it was in the 600M race that both girls had their best performances were both achieved personal bests. The boys under elevens the club had one pairing competing with Jack McLaughlin who ran very well in the 600M race and Conor Litchfield who tried very hard, Jack also had an impressive run in the 60M sprint. In the boys under 10 the pairing of Harry O’Reilly and Matthew Durnin both did themselves and their clubs proud as both ran very well with Harry also running very well in the 60M sprint.

In the under twelve Championships Niamh Brady was a very impressive winner in the 60M hurdles to collect her second provincial Hurdles Gold medal having earlier in the year won the Leinster Indoors. Niamh added to her vast medal collection by winning silver in the under twelve High jump with a leap of 1.29 just 1cm short of her PB of 1.30M which she set the previous Saturday in the team event and was joined on the podium by her training partner Judith Bell who won an excellent bronze with a jump of 1.25M, this was no more than Judith deserved as she has experienced heartbreak in the past with several fourth place finishes. Julie McLoughlin who is developing into a fine athlete especially at middle distance running when she ran a very strong 600M race and was very close to medalling.

The boys under twelves had a medal winner in Ronan Deery who had a great performance in the shot Putt competition to win bronze , Ronan also had a decent run in the 60M sprint as did his training partner Dean Murtagh, Dean also was unlucky not to medal in the Turbo Javelin. Sean Allen was unlucky not to make the final of the hurdles when he finished third in his heat and also continues to improve at his middle distance running however this championship probably came a couple of weeks too early for Sean as has just recently recovered from injury. Mark Litchfield ran a good heat in the 60M sprint and ran bravely in the 600M race.

Rory McLoughlin who has also recently returned from injury tried hard in all of his three events of the 600M, Long jump and 60M but unfortunately for Rory this event came a little too soon but Rory is fine young athlete and will benefit from the experience and the event will bring his recovery on.

The previous Monday the club had two teams competing in the team event with both boys and girls under 12 teams representing the club. The girls had a fantastic day especially as they had two under elevens in the four girls team to win the silver medals. The team consisted of Niamh Brady, Julie McLoughlin, Ellie Smyth and Lucy Brennan. The boys team performed very well too and had a very respectable 5th place finish with Sean Allen, Mark Litchfield, Dean Murtagh and Ronan Deery.

One of the highlights on the national athletics calendar took place in Tullamore on Saturday last when the All Ireland Schools Athletics Championships took place. The St Peters club had two athletes that qualified and both did themselves, their schools and club proud. Katie Murphy representing St Louis Dundalk once again delivered a good performance on the big stage when she threw 11.81M to win a bronze medal. Gabriel Bell also had an excellent performance in the Intermediate Long jump Competition when he leaped 6.13M to finish in 5th place which was a very creditable result as Gabriel is eligible for this age group again next year.

The following day the same venue hosted the Leinster Senior Track and Field Championships and the club had two athletes in action. Conor Durnin followed up his victory in Scotland last week when he became Leinster Champion in the Triple Jump with a leap of 13.50M to continue his good season. Veteran club thrower Tom McGrane was also in action as he took part in three events. Tom, who is best known as a shot putter, won bronze in his main event with a throw of 9.29M and then won bronze in the discus with a throw of 20.05M. Tom finished off his hectic day when he took part in the Hammer competition and performed admirably with a season best throw of 17.35M to finish in sixth place.

On Friday night the annual Blackrock Beach Races took place in the glorious sunshine. The club had some good performances on the night. In the girls under 8 Emily O’Reilly finished 3rd with her twin sister Hannah O’Reilly not far behind her in sixth. In the girls under ten race Dearbhla Allen and Orla McLoughlin ran very well in a very competitive race. Harry O’Reilly ran very strongly to finish 2nd in the boys under 10. In the girls under 12 Niamh Brady and Judith Bell finished 6th and 8th respectively. In the final underage race involving the club Sean Allen put his recent injury frustrations behind him when he won the boys under 12 race and was closely followed by Jack McLaughlin. This was a most enjoyable evening and was concluded with fit for life relays were club chairperson Brendan Rogers running with his native Annagasson ran a very strong leg in the men’s relay race as did his wife Catherine Rogers in the ladies’ relay.

This week the club training resumes where our younger athletes will prepare for the upcoming Leinster Championships which take place in Tullamore on Saturday next.
