25 October 2016

Day 2 of the Louth Cross Country took place at Bush on Sunday last. The underfoot conditions were perfect on the wind swept course that was excellently hosted by Glenmore AC. The highlight of the day for the St Peters AC was undoubtedly the performance of their under 11 boys team. All four of the boys ran to the best of their ability and got their just deserts when they won the team competition and became county champions for 2016. The team was led home by the ever improving Jack McLaughlin who ran a very brace race to finish second, Harry O’Reilly was equally impressive by finishing in fourth place which was an excellent result considering he is still eligible for under ten, Conor Litchfield also saved his best race of the year for the Championship when he finished in seventh place and was closely followed by the excellent newcomer Padraic Tinnelly who is a major addition to the team.

The boys under thirteen boys team were also in the team medal prizes when they finished in third place, all four of these boys ran very bravely over the 2500M course it all but one of them still eligible to run in the under twelve age group. The team was led home by Sean Allen who is beginning to rediscover some form in fifth place closely followed by Rory McLoughlin and with both Mark Litchfield and Cian Loy battling their way through the field to win bronze for the club.

The girls under eleven team finished outside the medals with Ellie Smyth leading them home in 8th place, next in for the girls was Dearbhla Allen who is still under ten closely followed by Isabel Fitzpatrick and Katie Mulligan.

In the under thirteen girls although we didn't have a team Niamh Brady rediscovered her form to produce a third place finish which was a great run out of her age, both Lucy Smith and Julie McLoughlin also had decent runs, all three are still eligible to run under 12. Catherine Carey and Mia Finnegan were also in action in the girls under nine race and both girls performed admirably. The last athlete in action for the St Peters club was Eoghan Smith when he took part in the boys under 15, in what was a very strong field Eoghan ran very well to finish in eleventh place.

Training continues this Tuesday, as the club prepares for the upcoming Leinster Cross Country Championships with the even ages taking place this Saturday in Tyrrellstown.

18 October 2016

The Glenmore AC annual Cross Country event took place at Bush on Sunday and the St Peters AC were present with a sizeable turnout. The first race on the programme was the girls under 9, Orla McLoughlin led the St Peter’s girls home with a very impressive finish to come in in 4th place and collect a well-earned medal as the first ten in each of the juvenile races received medals. Orla was closely followed by club mates Mia Finnegan and twins Emily O’Reilly and Hannah O’Reilly and, although all three ran very well, they were unfortunate not to medal.

In the girls under eleven the St Peter’s club unfortunately had only one representative but that didn't deter Dearbhla Allen from making a good account of herself finishing just outside the ten medal positions. In the boys under eleven the club had seven athletes competing with Jack McLaughlin leading his club mates to finishing in third place closely followed by Harry O’Reilly in eighth. Cormac McKeown was next in and was really unlucky not to medal with a great run. Padraic Tinnelly, Conor Litchfield, Ben McKeown and Liam McQuillan all did really well.

In the girls under 13 the club had three athletes compete and although all three are actually under 12 all three made a good account of themselves with Niamh Brady led the St Peter’s girls home with a 6th place finish and Julie McLoughlin and Lucy Smith both coming in together in 11th and 12th place. The final juvenile race involving St Peter’s was the boys under 13 were the club had three athletes compete, as in the girls race all three are eligible for under 12 and all three made a good account of themselves with Sean Allen, Mark Litchfield and Cian Loy finishing in 4th, 5th and 6th place respectively.

In the 5k road race that followed Cathriona McKeown took part and ran very strongly in the blustery conditions as did brothers Andrew Rogers and Brendan Rogers.

Next weekend the Louth Cross Country Championships return with the uneven age groups and Intermediate races.

Day one of the Louth Cross Country Championships took place in glorious autumn sunshine in Meadowview Drogheda on Sunday. The St Peters club had a large representation with a total of thirty three Athletes wearing the Blue of the Dromiskin based club from the Novice ladies race to the non-championship under 8 boys and girls races.

The Novice ladies race kicked off the proceedings and the St Peters club had seven athletes competing. This was the second year in a row that the club had a team in this race which is a great example to our young athletes as some of the ladies competing were parents of the juvenile athletes. The team was led home by Sarah McCann closely followed by Cathriona McKeown. Next in was Breda Sheridan O’Reilly making a welcome return to the club she often represented as a juvenile in the past. The four remaining athletes were Patricia Smyth, Eilish Brady, Sharon Devin Healy and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, all seven put in a tremendous effort and did the club proud.

The juvenile program got under way with non-championship under 8 races were the club had two athletes in the girls race as twins Hannah O’Reilly and Emily O’Reilly both ran well as did Shane Deery in the boys, all three collected medals.

The girls under ten race was next and the club fielded a team of four that were outside the team medals but all four ran bravely Dearbhla Allen was first of the St Peters athletes to cross the line in sixth place closely followed by Orla McLoughlin in 9th, Catherine Carey and Mia Finnegan also ran their hearts out. In the under ten race Harry O’Reilly re-discovered his early season form to finish in second place closely followed by the greatly improved Ben McKeown in 8th place. Matthew Durnin, Liam McQuillan and Ryan Murtagh all ran well to win a second place finish for the team.

The girls under twelve also earned themselves a silver team medal with great efforts from Niamh Brady, Lucy Smith, Julie McLoughlin and Ellie Smyth the girls were supported by Isabel Fitzpatrick and Judith Bell who also tried hard over the 2000M course. The boys under twelve race also earned the St Peters club a second place finish. Sean Allen led the team home with a second place finish, Jack McLaughlin had a great run to finish 5th as did Cian Loy in seventh. Mark Litchfield and club mate Padraig Tinnelly battled for the last team spot with Mark just getting in by the smallest of margins. Dean Murtagh and Ronan Deery also battled for the club in a very competitive race.

Next week the cross country season continues with the Glenmore AC annual meeting which will be run over uneven ages which will be good preparation for the uneven championship.
