On Sunday the curtain came down on the Louth Athletics track and Field season when the annual Ardee and District AC sports day held in the Boys School field took place in perfect weather conditions in what was a very enjoyable afternoon of juvenile athletics. The St Peter’s club were well represented. Orla McLoughlin was the brightest light from the Dromiskin based club when she collected a full compliment of medals with her second place finish in the girls under 9 60M sprint, 3rd place in the 200M and 1st place in the Long Jump. Orla then was part of the under 9 relay team that finished third with Catherine Carey and twins Emily O’Reilly and Hannah O’Reilly. The O’Reilly girls completed their first year for the club with both showing good potential for the future with Hannah collecting an individual medal in the 60M sprint in the girls under 8 and Emily just missing out on a medal in the 200M. In the girls under eleven Lucy Brennan performed well in the 100M sprint in a very close finish to win bronze. Lucy then ran the anchor leg in the under eleven relay with good performances from Katie O’Reilly and Dearbhla Allen the girls finished an agonising 4th. Julie McLoughlin and Niamh Brady both had strong runs in the girls under 12 100M final with Julie finishing in 2nd place and Niamh in third. Niamh also had a good jump in the girls under 13 Long jump finishing in 2nd place. The girls also competed in the under 13 relay with Lucy Smith and Eimear Doyle from the Boyne Club but unfortunately they finished just outside the medals. Ava Brennan had a very good run in a close under 16 100M sprint to finish in third place.

Harry O’Reilly had good runs in both the 100M and the 200M and was unlucky not to medal in both. Sean Allen had good run in the 100M sprint to finish in second place and was also 2nd in the 800M which was a big improvement after a frustrating time with injury. Dean Murtagh won a bronze in the shot putt, with his training mate Ronan Deary getting a PB of 4.02M to win silver in the under 13 Long jump. Rory McLoughlin ran a very impressive 800M to win gold in the under 13 after a third place finish in the 100M sprint and third place in the long jump. Rory completed his day by collecting a bronze medal in the under 13 relay with Ronan Deary, Sean Allen and Jack O’Reilly.

On Friday last the annual Carlingford Road Races took place. The conditions were perfect and the large crowd of spectators that gathered were treated to a top class field competing in the 5k race and some very entertaining juvenile races. The juvenile races were for uneven ages and the first race with a St Peters athlete competing was the girls under 11 with Dearbhla Allen trying really hard to finish just outside the medals out of her age. In the boys under 11 Conor Litchfield and Jack McLaughlin both collected silverware and showed very encouraging signs with the upcoming cross country in mind.

Niamh Brady and Judith Bell ran well in the girls under 13 with Niamh inside the top ten and Judith in eleventh, both are still under twelve as were the two boys who competed in the boys under thirteen race with Sean Allen and Mark Litchfield running very well with 3rd and 5th place finishes respectively.

On Sunday Tullamore was the venue for the final of the National League with the St Peter’s club having no fewer than six athletes competing for the Louth teams. Mark Rogers was 3rd in the 400m hurdles with a season’s best time of 59.75, 4th in the pole vault with a vault of 2.60m and was 6th in the 110m hurdles in a time of 17.74. Conor Durnin was 4th in the triple jump with a leap of 12.84m. Tom McGrane was 7th in the discus with a throw of 20.51m and was also 7th in the hammer with a throw of 18.50m. Brendan Rogers took part in the 56lb weight for distance and with a season’s best throw of 4.18m finished in 7th place. Martin McGrane was also in action in the shot putt competition and, with a putt of 8.24m, finished in 8th place.

Eleanor Hoey was the only representative on the women's team when she took part in the hammer throwing a PB of 22.12m to finish 5th and 14.57m in the discus to finish 7th. Conor Durnin, Mark Rogers and Eleanor Hoey all took part in relay races. At the end of the day the Louth men's team finished in 8th position with the women going one place better with a 7th place finish.

This week athletes return to training with preparation for the upcoming Boyne Sports Day which will take place at the Lourdes Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The annual Le Chéile international track and field meeting took place on Saturday. Veteran club thrower Tom McGrane made the relatively short journey to Leixlip in Co. Kildare to compete in the shot putt event. Tom, who loves to compete and does so at every opportunity, could take the easier option and compete in the masters category but always competes at senior level were the weights are heavier and competition much tougher. Tom has had mixed fortunes so far this year enjoyed a return to form on Saturday when he threw 9.74m, this was a season best for Tom and indeed his best throw since 2014. This earned Tom a fourth place finish narrowly missing out on a bronze medal. However rediscovering his form made the journey worthwhile and the club are fortunate to have such a role model for our up and coming throwers.

This Friday the annual Glenmore 5k road race will take place at Carlingford which will be preceded with juvenile races. It is hoped the club will have a large turnout of athletes. This week the club will take a break from training for one week and training resumes as normal on Tuesday, 9 August.

Finally the club would like to congratulate and send best wishes to our coach Kathleen McConnell on her selection as part of the coaching team for the Irish team which will travel to Wales this week to compete in the Celtic Games.
