On Thursday night last the Louth junior Senior and masters track and field championships took place at the Lourdes stadium in Drogheda. This was a very well attended event and all athletes, officials and spectators were treated to a most enjoyable evening of athletics. The St Peters club were very well represented. Eilish Brady made her debut in the St Peters colours when she ran in the fit for life mile, Eilish who is one of the clubs most dedicated coaches didn't look out of place on the track and finished a very respectable 10th in a time of 8.13. The ever green Brendan Rogers was in fine form and like Eilish set great example to the juveniles he coaches when he won gold in his age category (over 55) in both the 200M in a time of 30.25 and the long jump with a leap of 4.27M. Shot putter Tom McGrane who is always available for competition took part in the senior shot putt and with a throw of 9.31M won a silver medal. Conor Durnin who is enjoying a good season at the triple jump won gold in the senior long jump with a leap of 5.69M, Conor also took part in the senior 400M and finished in third place in a time of 55.09. The final athlete in action was Eleanor Hoey who made a successful return to competitive action when she won gold in the senior women's 100M in a time of 14.02.

On Saturday the same venue hosted the annual Setanta Games sports day. In glorious sunshine the younger athletes of the county served up a most enjoyable afternoon of athletics. Ava Brennan who is enjoying a return to form pocketed two medals with gold in the 100M and bronze in the long jump with a leap of 4.55M. The St Peters club top juvenile shot putter Katie Murphy once again finished top of the podium in the girls under 16 competition. Eoghan Smyth won a bronze medal in the boys under 15 100M. Jack O’Reilly ran well in the 100M sprint to finish just outside the medals in the under 13 age group. In the boys under 12 Cian Loy was the only athlete on duty and ran very well in the boys 300M race to finish fourth, Cian was then part of a mixed club relay team that won gold in the under 13 4 x 100 relay. The girls under twelve were in fine form with Niamh Brady winning bronze in the 80M and Julie McLoughlin winning bronze in the 300M. The highlight from a club perspective was the under twelve long jump when all three places on the podium were occupied by St Peters Athletes with Julie McLoughlin in third with a jump of 3.75M, Niamh Brady in second with a leap of 3.93 and Judith Bell in first place with a fantastic leap of 4.07 on her final jump having broken in her previous two attempts. The icing on the cake for our under twelve girls was when they won bronze in the under 13 4 x 100 relay with Lucy Smith joining them and running a very strong third leg. The girls under eleven enjoyed success when Lucy Brennan won silver in the 80M sprint final and set a new PB in the under twelve long jump with a leap of 3.60M. Katie Mulligan had a great performance in the turbo javelin to win silver. The under eleven girls then put in a great performance in the under eleven relay to win gold with the team consisting of Katie Mulligan, Ellie Smyth, Isabel Fitzpatrick and Lucy Brennan. Harry O’Reilly was in fine form when we won bronze in the 80M and 200M in the boys under ten age group. In the girls under 9 Orla McLoughlin ran a great 60M race to win a silver medal. The club was also represented in the girls under 8 age group with twins Emily O’Reilly and Hannah O’Reilly just finishing outside the medals with very brave runs.

12 July 2016

On Sunday last the St Peters AC had five athletes that travelled to compete at the National Juvenile track and field championships at Tullamore. Three of the athletes were competing in the under twelve age group. Niamh Brady and Judith Bell took part in the high jump. Both of these fine athletes have worked hard at this event since in the indoor championships earlier in the year and their hard work was clearly evident as both made great improvements with Niamh jumping 1M 25 and Judith 1M20. Unfortunately both missed out narrowly on medals but both performed very well. Ronan Deery took his place at the under 12 shot putt competition having qualified from his recent bronze medal win at the Leinster championships. Ronan put in a good performance with a putt of 7.82M although it was outside the medals in a very high standard of competition the experience of competing at the national championships will stand him in good stead for the future. Gabriel Bell was in action in the under 16 Long jump, unfortunately it just wasn't Gabriel's day and although he leaped to a very respectable 5.87M it wasn't enough to take his usual podium finish. The winning jump was 6.36M which added to this brilliant young athlete’s frustration as he has recently jump 6.40M. Shot Putter Martin McGrane was the final St Peters athlete in action and he too performed admirably with a putt of 9.55M to finish in fifth place.

The previous day the National B championships took place at the same venue. This is a competition for athletes who hadn't qualified for the national championships from their provincial championships. The St Peters club had a total of six athletes competing. Dean Murtagh had a great performance in the shot putt with a putt of 6.46, which was very good as it took place during a monsoon like down pour of rain to win the bronze medal. Sean Allen better known for his running had a good performance in the under 12 high jump when he won gold with a jump of 1.21M. Julie Mc Loughlin leaped to a new PB in the long jump of 3.75M. Cian Loy had a good run in the sixty metre sprint just missing out narrowly on a place in the final. Lucy Smith had a brave run in the sixty Metre sprint and Rory McLoughlin made a return to the 600M distance with a sub 1.50 after injury.

The club also had athletes take part in the annual Dunleer 4 mile race with the Rogers family in action. Brendan Rogers, Catherine Rogers and their daughter Emily Rogers better known as a high jumper along with Brendan's brother Andrew Rogers all performed well on the testing four mile course.

This week the Louth Junior, Senior and Master track and field championships will take place at the Lourdes stadium in Drogheda on Thursday so there will be no juvenile training on that night.
