20 December 2016

As the Cross Country season ended last week the indoor season got underway with the Baseline meeting at Athlone IT on Wednesday. Emily Rogers who had taken a break from competition made her return to action in the high jump event. Emily has being training really well recently and really turned on the style by jumping 1.77M to a new PB and victory. This is the just reward for Emily's training and dedication and gives her great optimism for the season ahead.

On Sunday Drogheda and District AC held their inaugural Christmas 5k, the St Peters Club were represented by Andrew Rogers who ran 20.37 to come second place in his new category of over 60, closely followed by his younger brother Brendan Rogers who came in 20.47.

The club will now take a break for the Christmas holidays and training will resume on Tuesday, 3 January. The St Peters club would like to wish all its members and supporters a very happy Christmas and a happy sporting new year.

The curtain came down on the Cross Country season with National Novice and juvenile championships for uneven ages which was hosted by Athletics Louth in DKIT on Sunday last. The St Peters club had eight athletes that qualified as part of the Louth under 11 and 13 teams but unfortunately two of the athletes were unable to compete due to sickness.

The boys under eleven was the first race with St Peters athletes involvement and the boys accounted for themselves excellently. Both Jack McLaughlin and Harry O’Reilly didn't look out of place as the mixed with the athletes in the business end of the race. This was the first time both had run at national level but these ever improving athletes didn't look out of place and weren't far away from the individual medals which are awarded to the first twelve as they were part of a large wave of competitors that crossed the line just seconds behind the first twelve. Jack crossed the line in 24th with Harry in 27th, both were the first two scorers on the Louth team. Padraic Tinnelly soon followed his club mates and both he and Conor Litchfield can be proud of their efforts in reaching the National Championships in the first year competing for the club.

The under thirteen race didn't go as well as the under eleven for the St Peters club as both athletes struggled to break out of large groups that they got boxed into. However both Sean Allen and Mark Litchfield are strong runners and both will be looking forward to 2017 with renewed optimism as both have being going well in training lately and Sean in particular is showing signs of reproducing his form from last year.

The event itself was a fantastic spectacle with the country’s finest juvenile athletes compete in Dundalk, huge credit must go the Athletics Louth County Board for yet again doing the County proud in the fantastic setting of DKIT.
