The St Peters AC athletes made a very successful road trip to Adamstown in Co. Wexford on Sunday. Although the journey down was long the road home seemed a lot shorter with no fewer than seven championship medals accompanying the athletes home. The club had athletes compete in both the boys and girls Under 11 and 13 races.

The best performances came in the under eleven races when the club had individual medalist in both the boys and girls races. Dearbhla Allen who had this year developed into a fine athlete once again produced the goods as she worked her way through the large field of athletes and through the mud to finish in tenth place, Dearbhla was also part of the Louth team that finished third to collect a team bronze medal also.

Harry O’Reilly then powered through the very competitive field in the boys under 11 race to finish very strong and win a well deserved individual medal when he finished in seventh place. Harry was part of the Louth team that finished third to collect his second medal of the day. Ben McKeown got his reward for his hard work and dedication to training when he also worked very hard to take his place on the Louth team and win his first provincial medal. Ruairi Carpenter who was running his first Leinster championship ran very bravely and will have learned valuable experience as he can still run under 11 next year.

The boys under thirteen race was also a successful race for the wee county as again the Louth team finished in third place with two St Peters Athletes making up the County team of six. Seán Allen led the St Peters charge with a very brave run, indeed his best run for a long time to be the third scorer on the Louth team, Seán was joined on the county team by Cian Gorham who was the 4th team scorer, Cian done great work on the second half of the course as at the halfway point he looked to be totally out of contention but showed great resilience to fight his way back. The Louth team like the under 11 finished in third to earn the boys well deserved bronze team medals. Mark Litchfield who has had a brilliant season was desperately unlucky not to medal on the Louth team having recently recovered from injury, Mark’s brother Conor Litchfield also ran the very testing course moving up an age and gained great experience from doing so. Dean Murtagh also took part but unfortunately for Dean he went over on an ankle and had to withdraw at the half way point.

The St Peters club was also represented in the girls under 13 race and although none of the girls managed to medal it was great to see the club singlet being worn with pride the six girls who took part, Niamh Brady led the team charge and closely followed by Lucy Smyth and Julie McLoughlin. Ellie Smyth, Isibeal Fitzpatrick and Judith Bell also ran very well and all six will reap the benefits of the cross country season when they return to the track in the new year.

On Sunday the curtain came down on the Louth juvenile cross country season with both the senior men and women championship races which were preceded by the annual juvenile cross country relays. The St Peter’s club had just three teams compete over the 4x500m event. The event was really enjoyable and great credit must go to the Drogheda and District club for providing an excellent facility as hosts.

The highlight for the St Peters Club was the boys under 14 race, the St Peters boys would have being slight favourites going into the race having won the County under 14 team Cross Country Championships back in October, Mark Litchfield ran the first leg and laid the foundation for what was to follow as he handed over to Calum Grant with a commanding lead, Calum who is in his first Cross Country season ran his heart out and managed to hold on to the lead, Cian Gorham then ran the third leg which was a really tough one as other clubs seemed to have strong runners in that leg however Cian managed to hold on to the lead and hand over to Seán Allen to run the anchor leg, Seán had a battle on his hands but his experience shone through as although he lost the lead at one stage he regained the lead and stormed to victory.

The boys under 12 race was also a keenly contested affair when the St Peter’s club were again in the medals. Harry O’Reilly, Ben McKeown, Cormac McKeown and Pádraic Tinnelly had a great battle with their neighbours Blackrock to hold onto third place and win much deserved medals.

The girls under ten also ran very bravely and although they didn't manage to be in the medal positions all four gained valuable experience and more importantly enjoyed the experience, Orla McLoughlin ran a very strong leg to start and Emily O’Reilly, Mia Finnegan and Hannah O’Reilly also performed well.

The St. Peter's Club had a representative in the ladies senior for the first time in a few years when Sarah McCann pulled on the club singlet and did very well for her first time in a senior Cross Country race.

Next weekend the club athletes’ attentions turn to the Leinster Championships for uneven ages which takes place in Adamstown, Co. Wexford. The club will have athletes compete in both the girls and boys under eleven and under thirteen races.
