26 December 2007

2007 witnessed a number of excellent performances by the athletes of Dromiskin-based St Peter’s AC. As far as can currently be ascertained, the year just closing saw the setting of five new club senior records and the equalling of a sixth record.

Back in January Kevin McManus equalled his own high jump record, set in Scotland the previous September, with a leap of 1.85m at the Leinster Indoor Championships in Nenagh. Three months later Kevin set a new Shot Putt record of 7.70m at the Cushinstown AC Sports in Co Meath. In June two more club records, both in the Triple Jump, were set at the Leinster Juvenile Championships in Tullamore. Kevin McManus leapt out to 11.53m while Olivia McDonald set a new women’s record with a 9.48m jump. Finally in July, and also at the Co Offaly venue, Hilary Kerr became a double record setter with marks of 12.96 seconds in the 100m and 5.28m in the Long Jump. The competition this time was the Irish Juvenile Championships.

St Peter’s AC is now taking a break from the regular club training sessions. These will resume after the Christmas and New Year break on Tuesday 8th January. Those athletes looking for a run in the meantime could consider the 5km handicap race in Dundalk on New Year’s Day. This is hosted by North East Runners’ and starts at 11 a.m. from the Táin Bridge. The fact that this race is handicapped means that it is suitable for all, regardless of their ability (or lack thereof) over the 5km distance.

The athletes of Dromiskin-based St Peter’s AC are now taking a break from the regular club training sessions. These will resume after the Christmas and New Year break on Tuesday 8th January.

Meanwhile there will be a few events locally on Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day to ensure that the club’s athletes do not loose too much fitness during their well-deserved break. On Christmas Day Dunleer AC are hosting a GOAL Mile event between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. There will be another GOAL Mile event at the new track in Bush on St Stephen’s Day, this time hosted by Glenmore AC. This is scheduled to be held between 11 a.m. and 12 noon.

The ever-popular North East Runners’ 5km handicap race also starts at 11 a.m. on St Stephen’s morning from the Táin Bridge in Dundalk. The fact that this race is handicapped means that it is suitable for all, regardless of their ability (or lack thereof) over the 5km distance. Donations for GOAL will also be accepted at this event, which is followed by complementary refreshments and prize-giving in the Harp Brewery.

12 December 2007

Last Saturday two young javelin throwers from Dromiskin-based St Peter’s AC travelled to Dublin's Santry Stadium to train as part of the Irish National Throws Squad. They were Olivia McDonald and Laura O’Neill. Both are reigning Leinster champions in their age group – Olivia at Under 18 level and Laura at Under 16 level - and also won medals at national level in 2007. In fact Olivia was the only athlete from County Louth to win a medal at this year's National Senior Track and Field Championships.

At Santry last Saturday the javelin throwers trained under the direction of the renowned Dan Kennedy. Dan has coached several of Ireland’s leading javelin specialists over the past few decades.

As at all these national squad sessions, the training is very intensive, as the athletes are at the track from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. These sessions are an excellent complement to the athletes’ regular winter training. This is especially so for an event like the javelin, which, due to the long distances that it can be thrown, is not part of the indoor athletics programme.

Registration fees (20 euro) for 2008 are now due. Payment may be made to any of the club coaches at the regular club training sessions in Dromiskin on Tuesday or Thursday evenings.

5 December 2007

Last Thursday (29th November) the Louth Secondary Schools' Cross Country Championships were held in the grounds of DkIT. This marked the revival of an event which had last been staged in 1998. Five athletes from Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC represented their schools at the splendidly appointed Dundalk venue on a nice bright, though somewhat chilly, day.

Star of the show for the St Peter's contingent was Hilary Kerr who was victorious in the Intermediate (Under 17) Girls' race. Representing Dún Lughaidh, she completed the 2000m distance in 7 minutes 56 seconds. Caoimhe Hoey, likewise at school in Dún Lughaidh, was also very impressive, as she took the silver medal in the Junior (Under 15) Girls' 1500m race. This particular race attracted the largest field of the day.

The other St Peter's athletes in action on the undulating course were Emily Rogers (Our Lady's College, Greenhills) in the Minor (Under 14) Girls' 1000m race, Amy Samson (Dún Lughaidh) in the Junior Girls' race, and Laura O’Neill (Dún Lughaidh) in the Intermediate Girls' race.

Some St Peter's athletes attend Coláiste Rís and St Vincent's, but unfortunately these two schools were unable to be represented on the day due to a clash with other events.

Great credit is due to those from St Peter's AC (especially Maria Duffy, Kevin Barry Mackin and Kathleen McConnell) and from other clubs in the county who helped to organise this revived event, and to Diarmuid Cahill of DkIT and the teachers in the various schools for their assistance and co-operation.
