29 August 2007

Last weekend athletes from Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC were in action in the national finals of the Community Games at Mosney in County Meath and in the Northern Ireland Open Masters' Championships at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast.

On Saturday three of the older athletes from the club travelled to the Mary Peters Track for the Northern Ireland Championships. This event attracted athletes from the four provinces of Ireland, with clubs from as far away as Counties Cork and Kerry represented at the famous Belfast venue, which is the site of the Ireland's first ever tartan track. The St Peter's athletes had an extremely successful day, as they returned home with four gold medals and one silver medal.

Kevin Barry Mackin had a great double in the 35-39 age group as he won both the Long Jump (4.44) and Javelin (25.23). He has been showing great versatility in the athletics arena since he returned home from the United States recently, as he is also this year's Louth Senior 3000m champion. Tom McGrane is another athlete who has returned to live locally within the past year, and he followed on from his successes in the Louth Championships in the 40-44 age group with another victory in the Shot (7.58) and a silver medal in the 400m (1:02.19). Declan Gernon, competing in the same age group as Tom, won the Discus (15.72), just as he had at county level, and was also 4th in the 100m (14.87).

Hilary Kerr and Laura O’Neill were in action in the Community Games in Mosney. Both girls had come through two previous Community Games events this year to qualify for the national finals, as they had been victorious initially in the local Fane area (Darver, Dromiskin and Haggardstown) event at Dromiskin in May and then in the County Louth finals at Bush in June.

On Saturday Hilary ran well to qualify for the final of the Under 16 100m, but finished outside the medals in the final. The following day Laura finished in 4th place in the Under 16 Javelin for the second successive year. Both girls were somewhat disappointed with their performances, but they should not be too downhearted, as they are both at the end of a very successful, but long and tiring, season. Earlier in the summer Hilary won the AAI national title in her main event, the Long Jump, and Laura won national medals in the Javelin at both the AAI and Irish Schools' Championships.

22 August 2007

Last Wednesday night St Peter's AC fielded a strong team of 12 athletes in the third and final round of the Louth Juvenile Club Challenge in Ardee. Ian McDonald, Kevin McManus, Hilary Kerr and Laura O’Neill impressed in the 100m and Shot Putt at Under 17 level. The standard bearers for the Dromiskin-based club in the same events at Under 13 level were Éamonn McManus and Shauna Bolton. In the Under 11 80m and Ball Throw events, Liam Fussey, Pádraig McGinn, Elizabeth Bell and Chloe Bolton performed well. Finally Gabriel Bell and Conor Hoey were in action in the Under 9 80m and Long Jump.

On Sunday afternoon some of these athletes returned to Ardee for the Ardee & District AC Juvenile Sports. Ian McDonald impressed once more as he won silver medals in both the Under 16 Boys' 100m and Long Jump (4.45m). St Peter's other medal winning athlete on Sunday was Joseph Mullen who took bronze in the Under 12 Boys' 800m. Pádraig McGinn, Elizabeth Bell and Gabriel Bell were also back in the mid-Louth town on Sunday where they performed well once again. They were joined by Niamh Fussey, Niamh Mernagh, Martin McGrane, Michael Mullen and Daniel Mullen who all did their best and enjoyed their last track meet of the season.

Next weekend Hilary Kerr and Laura O’Neill will be in action at Under 16 level in the National Finals of the Community Games in Mosney, Co Meath. Hilary goes in the 100m and Laura will throw the Javelin. Both girls will be hoping to add national Community Games medals to those which they have already won in AAI and Schools' championships this year. At the other end of the age spectrum some of the club's masters' athletes are expected to compete in the Northern Ireland Masters' Championships at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast.

Nikayla has being having a great season and once again she finished in the medals with a 3rd place finish in the Under 10 Girls' 100m and 4th place in the 200m.

8 August 2007

Last Saturday Olivia McDonald of Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC was part of the victorious Irish team at the Celtic Games international meet in Antrim. Her fine throw of 35.24m in the Under 18 Javelin was the best of the Irish athletes in the event and saw her finish in 3rd place behind Lisa Glover (Scotland) and Danielle Hamer (Wales). Ireland won the team award in both the Under 18 Girls category and the overall match, with Scotland 2nd and Wales 3rd in both cases. This was Olivia's third successive year representing Ireland in the Celtic Games, which is a long established annual event stretching back to 1977 for Under 18 and Under 16 athletes from Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

On Friday night three young brothers ran in the Glenmore AC road races in Carlingford. Joseph Mullen finished in the medals as he ran very well to finish 8th in the Under 12 race. Michael Mullen finished agonisingly close to a medal with a strong run for 11th place in the Under 10 race. Daniel Mullen, the youngest of the three, who normally competes at Under 8 level, also ran well in the Under 10 race, as this was the youngest age group available on the night.

Next Sunday the Boyne AC Sports for juvenile and junior athletes take place at Meadowview in Drogheda. The starting time is 1.30 p.m. The regular club training sessions for St Peter's AC athletes resume at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday 14th August in Dromiskin. The following night (Wednesday 15th) sees the staging of the third and final round of the Louth Juvenile Club Challenge in Ardee.

1 August 2007

Last Saturday brought yet more success at national level to Dromiskin's St Peter's AC, as three athletes travelled to Tullamore for the final day of the Irish Juvenile Championships. Olivia McDonald won her fifth national medal this year, throwing 34.34m to take silver in the Under 18 Javelin. Sorcha Conway just missed a medal in this event as she finished in 4th place with a 27.77m throw. Her younger sister, Brianán Conway, also finished in 4th place in her event with a personal best throw of 25.25m in the Under 15 Javelin.

Next Saturday Olivia will become the first St Peter's athlete to represent Ireland this year when she throws the Javelin in the Celtic Games in Antrim.   This will be Olivia's third successive year competing in this event, which is an annual match between teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales at Under 16 and Under 18 level.

Earlier last week, on Tuesday night, St Peter's had a very successful evening at the Louth Junior, Senior and Masters' Championships. In recent years these championships have been held in Navan, but with the new Tartan track in Bush having opened last May, the county's premier athletics competition was once again held on home ground. A team of nine athletes from the club participated in the championships, winning a total of 20 gold, 9 silver and 1 bronze medal. This meant the club finished in second place in the medal table, just behind Dunleer AC, which had also been the case at the Louth Juvenile Championships earlier this year.

In the Junior (Under 20) events, the four St Peter's athletes won 10 gold and 4 silver medals. Kevin McManus won 5 gold medals, as he was victorious in the 100m (12.2), 200m (26.2), Long Jump (5.45), Shot (11.16) and Javelin (27.08). Olivia McDonald claimed 4 golds and 1 silver with wins in the 100m (13.1), Long Jump (4.85), Shot (8.75) and Javelin (7.92), and a runner-up spot in the Discus (15.79). Eoin Gernon won the Discus (16.46) and was second in both the Long Jump (4.98) and Javelin (25.88). Sorcha Conway was second in the Javelin (29.50). At the end of the evening these four athletes combined to win the Senior Mixed 4x100m relay.

In the Senior events Kevin Barry Mackin won the 3000m (13:19) and took bronze in the 200m. His sister, Fiona Mackin, took a silver medal in each of the three throwing events – the Shot (4.65), Discus (10.80) and Javelin (18.59).

Three St Peter's athletes competed in the Masters' events, where they won a total of 8 gold and 2 silver medals in the 40-44 years age group. Another member of the Mackin family, Maria Duffy (née Mackin), became a 3-time champion, as she won the Long Jump (3.72), Shot (8.25) and Javelin (18.65). Tom McGrane also won three events with victories in the 100m (13.9), 200m (27.4) and Shot (7.60). Finally, not to be outdone by his son Eoin's successes at Junior level, Declan Gernon won the Discus (16.38) and Javelin (22.90) and finished runner-up in the 100m (14.2) and Shot (6.84).

Tonight (Wednesday) some St Peter's athletes are planning to compete at the Senior Graded Meet in Santry, Dublin. On Friday night the Glenmore AC road races are being held in Carlingford. The juvenile races at 7 p.m. (Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14) will be followed by the senior 5km race at 8 p.m.

The club are now taking a short break from the regular Tuesday and Thursday evening training sessions. These will resume on Tuesday 14th August.
