25 July 2007

Last weekend the Irish National Senior Championships were held at the famous Santry Stadium in Dublin. Just a few athletes from Co Louth made the short trip southwards on the M1 motorway. And just one of the county's athletes medalled at the country's premier athletics competition. That was Olivia McDonald from St Peter's AC in Dromiskin, who, at just 17 years of age, won bronze in the Women's Javelin for the second year in succession. This was Olivia's fourth medal at national level this year, as she had already won silver in the Javelin at the Irish Schools' Championships and bronze in both the Javelin and 4x100m at the Irish Junior Championships.

In Santry last Saturday Olivia opened with a season's best throw of 35.23m which left her in second place at the end of the first round of the competition. The leader at this stage was Anita White of Dublin Striders who had a great throw of 44.97m. Olivia's second round throw was a disappointing 29.70m, and Denise Byrne of Clonliffe Harriers relegated Olivia to third place when she threw 37.56m in this round. In the next three rounds Olivia had a consistent series of throws close to her best – 34.00m, 34.72m and 34.90m. In the final round she was a little down on her best with a 32.14m throw. During the last four rounds neither White nor Byrne had improved any further on their earlier throws, so the final positions were as at the end of round 2: 1st Anita White 44.97m; 2nd Denise Byrne 37.56m; 3rd Olivia McDonald 35.23m.

Peter McDonald, Olivia's older brother, had also planned to compete in the Javelin at the Irish Senior Championships, but unfortunately he had to withdraw a few days beforehand due to injury.

Next Saturday Olivia will be in Tullamore for the finals of the Irish Juvenile Championships, where she has qualified for both the Javelin and Shot Putt events at Under 18 level. She will be joined in the Under 18 Javelin by her St Peter's clubmate Sorcha Conway. Brianán Conway, Sorcha's younger sister, will be in action in the Under 15 Javelin.

Last Thursday night the second round of the Louth Juvenile Club Challenge took place in Bush. Nearly all of St Peter's younger athletes were in action and they performed well, scoring more points than they had in the previous round in Drogheda. The third and final round is due to be held in Ardee, but a date for this fixture has yet to be confirmed.

18 July 2007

Last weekend five athletes from Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC travelled to Tullamore for the Irish National Juvenile Championships. It proved to be yet another very successful weekend for the club, as the athletes retuned with one gold and one bronze medal, and every single athlete finished in the top eight in their events.

Star of the show was Hilary Kerr who added 10cm to her Long Jump personal best performance for the second weekend in a row. Her magnificent jump of 5.28m won her the national Under 17 title. Hilary also competed in the 100m, where she dipped under 13 seconds for the first time to finish 6th in the final with a time of 12.96. The following wind was a legal +1.4 m/s.

Laura O’Neill added over 3 metres to her Javelin PB – an incredible improvement – to take the bronze medal in the Under 16 event with a throw of 32.97m. Laura is certainly maintaining the fine tradition of javelin throwing for which St Peter's has become renowned in the athletics world.

Kevin McManus competed in three events at Under 17 level, but finished just outside the medals. He started with the Long Jump on Saturday morning where he leapt 5.46m for 4th place. Later that day he was in action in is main event – the High Jump – where his height of 1.70m was only sufficient for 6th place. Kevin returned to Tullamore on Sunday to run the 300m Hurdles, finishing in 7th place with a time of 44.39. Just behind Kevin in the Under 17 High Jump was his fellow St Peter's athlete Eoin Gernon who jumped a fine personal best of 1.55m for 8th place. Also finishing in 8th place with a PB performance was Ian McDonald in the Under 16 Javelin with a throw of 30.68m.

The remaining athletes from St Peter's who have qualified for the Irish National Juvenile Championships – Olivia McDonald and sisters Sorcha Conway and Brianán Conway – will be in action on the second weekend of the championships on Saturday 28th July.

Last Thursday night the first round of the Louth Juvenile Club Challenge took place in Drogheda. Most of St Peter's younger athletes were in action and they performed well. The team on the night was: Elizabeth Bell, Aaron Byrne, Aisling Byrne, Emma Dennis, Liam Fussey, Niamh Fussey, Aisling Gernon, Declan Gernon, Eoin Gernon, Nikayla Hamill, Sarah Leddy, Lisa McDonald, Pauraic McGinn, Ellen McGuinness, Orlaith McMahon, Niamh Mernagh, Daniel Mullen, Joseph Mullen and Michael Mullen. The second round of this league takes place in Bush tomorrow night (Thursday). All athletes should be at the track by 6.30 p.m., as the team managers must lodge details of the team with the organisers before the first event at 7 p.m.

Next weekend brother and sister Peter McDonald and Olivia McDonald will be in action in the Javelin events for St Peter's in the premier competition of the year in Ireland – the Irish National Senior Championships at Santry in Dublin. Finally the Louth Junior, Senior and Masters' Championships will be held in Bush on Tuesday next (24th July). Entries close at 6.30 p.m. and the action starts at 7 p.m.

11 July 2007

Last Sunday a team of five athletes from Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC travelled to Tullamore for the Irish National Junior (Under 20) Championships. They had an extremely successful day, as every one of the athletes returned home with a national medal.

Kevin McManus became the first St Peter's athlete to win a gold medal at national level during the current summer track and field season, as he leapt 1.70 metres for 1st place in the High Jump. Kevin has been having a somewhat frustrating season, but he should take great heart from being crowned Irish Junior champion at just 16 years of age. The most experienced member of the St Peter's team, the ever-dependable and competitive Olivia McDonald, added an AAI bronze medal to her Irish Schools' silver medal with a fine throw of 34.03 metres in the Javelin. The youngest athlete on the team, Hilary Kerr, jumped a magnificent 5.18 metres for 4th place in the Long Jump. This was a well-deserved personal best performance for Hilary after a series of very consistent performances over 5 metres this summer. Earlier she had competed in the 100m where she finished 5th in her heat with a clocking of 13.10 seconds. At the end of the meet St Peter's claimed another bronze medal, as their Women's 4x100m relay team of Hilary Kerr, Olivia McDonald, Rosaleen Galligan and Emily Kerr clocked 57.22 seconds to finish in 3rd place behind two Munster clubs.

Tomorrow (Thursday 12 July) sees the staging of the 1st round of the Athletics Louth Club Challenge, which is being hosted by Boyne AC. There are events for the various juvenile age groups up to and including Under 17. Athletes must be at the Drogheda venue no later than 6.30 p.m. This is a team event and the team managers will have to organise the athletes on their teams prior to the first event of the competition at 7 p.m.

Next weekend Kevin McManus and Hilary Kerr will be in Tullamore once again – this time for the Irish National Juvenile Championships where they will compete at Under 17 level. Kevin will be joined in the High Jump event by Eoin Gernon, while St Peter's will also have two Javelin throwers in action at Under 16 level – Ian McDonald and Laura O’Neill, who will be attempting to follow on from her great silver medal performance in the Irish Schools' Championships. Three further athletes from St Peter's – Olivia McDonald, Sorcha Conway and Brianán Conway – have qualified for the finals of the Irish Juvenile Championships, but their events are not being held until Saturday 28 July.

4 July 2007

Last Friday night six of the younger athletes from Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC were in Dundalk for the Dundealgan AC road races. These races are a very popular annual event with athletes from both Louth and the neighbouring counties, and medals were awarded to the top six finishers in each of the juvenile races. The most successful athlete of the squad was Nikayla Hamill, who ran a tremendous race in the opening event of the night to take 3rd place in the Under 10 Girls' 600m. Three athletes from the club then ran in the Boys' Under 10 600m. Declan Gernon, who has been excelling in the Long Jump this year, ran strongly to finish in 8th place in a very competitive field. Michael Mullen and Martin McGrane also ran well in this race and were not too far behind. Finally Joseph Mullen exceeded expectations with a very impressive 6th place in the Boys' Under 12 800m. Pauraic McGinn had also warmed up for this race, but unfortunately had to pull out just before the start, which was a pity as he has been running very well in training recently.

This week the inaugural Summer Coaching Camp for athletes in Co. Louth aged 10 years and upwards is being held at the new track in Bush. This camp has been organised by Maria Duffy, who is one of the coaches with St Peter's, and is also the Development Officer for athletics in the county. Top coaches from around Ireland, including Gary Ryan, the national Director of Coaching, are due to attend the camp.

This coming Sunday three of the club's athletes are due to travel to Tullamore for the Irish National Junior (Under 20) Championships. Olivia McDonald has entered the Javelin, Hilary Kerr the Long Jump and Kevin McManus the High Jump. All three athletes will be competing well above their normal age groups, as Olivia is currently an Under 18 athlete, and Hilary and Kevin are both Under 17.

Finally a club meeting will be held in the St Joseph's GFC clubrooms in Dromiskin on Monday next at 7.30 p.m. At least one parent of each juvenile athlete in the club should make an effort to attend this meeting, where they will be updated on the club's activities and have an opportunity to voice their opinions.
